Types of Shows

Before any dog can be shown at a Kennel Club Licensed Show, other than an exemption show, it must be registered with the Kennel Club. Details Regarding registration can be obtained from the Kennel Club (tel 0870 6066 750)

Having ensured that your dog is correctly registered you should then decide in which type of show you wish to enter. It is advisable to start showing a dog at a small show, using the experience gained to progress to the larger shows.

Companion Dog Shows
Small local dog shows usually held on behalf of a charity or similar organisation. They include 'fun' classes in which both pedigree and non-pedigree dogs may compete and they may, and frequently do also offer classes for pedigree dogs only.

Entries can only be made on the day of the show. Local newspapers, libraries and veterinary surgeries often advertise local shows.

Limited Shows
Shows limited to members of the organising society or to exhibitors resident in a specified area. Dogs which have won a Challenge Certificate or gained any award that counts towards the title of Champion may not compete in Limited Shows.

Open Shows
Shows with no restrictions

Championship Shows
Shows at which Kennel Club Challenge Certificates are on offer. To become a Champion, a dog must obtain three Challenge Certificates under three different judges with at least one of the Challenge Certificates being awarded when the dog was over twelve months of age. The judge will decide which dog wins the Challenge Certificate for its sex and it should be appreciated that a Challenge Certificate is not a class award but a separate competition. The judge will decide which of the dogs entered in the breed classification are to be considered for the Challenge Certificate award.
